PAQPre-emptively Answered Questions

The following words were written by a human

What is this about?

Effing the ineffable. A space to live new culture! Qualia is somewhere between a research symposium, the best house party you’ve ever been to, and a curated festival in private nature. Something like this hasn’t happened before, so honestly, we’re not quite sure.

This is a data-driven research event. This is more for doing phenomenological research than talking about research, but there will assuredly be talks.

Lastly, this is an advanced event. Side effects may include involuntary personal development, struggle, embodiment, coherence, unexpected tenderness, transcendence, and better questions.

Qualia is not theoretical. Qualia is all that we know.

What kind of festival?

It means fun. Dancing. Discovery. The edge. Immersive, playful, curious, reverent, irreverent, in on the joke.

We believe fun leads to focus, and focus leads to insight.

What happens to the research?

The Garden is becoming an open-source project. As a part of this, we invite everyone to get their clipboards out and help establish the practices, norms, and ethics of this research collectively. This is part of making new culture.

We want to share what we learn. Any data collection will be opt-in, with a clear explanation of what’s being collected and why. We’ll share findings while protecting people’s privacy. Coming to the festival doesn’t mean agreeing to be studied.

Is this part of something bigger?

A festival to begin a phenomenological research residency month. Afterwards, there’s an optional three-week residency: more time to follow a question, bring something to life, and live a little! Come for the festival, or stay for the month.

Can anyone come?

No. It’s curated for character, via application.

Who is this event not appropriate for?

This event is not appropriate for children, pregnant people, people with epilepsy or heart conditions, or smokers.

I’m sober. Will that be weird?

No, qualia is a hell of a drug. You’ll fit right in.

Any weird rules?

No alcohol, no ketamine, no smoking, no small talk.

What do you mean, no small talk?

We’re trying to create an altered state of consciousness: a liminal space where something can open, or shift, or break through. Be sensitive to what breaks the spell.

Small talk is discouraged. Approach each interaction with attunement. Try to drop your subroutines and scripts, and pay attention. First, to your own witness. Then your body. Then your environment. Then other beings.

Will this be overstimulating?

Parts may be, for some. This is an advanced event. Everything is opt-in. The land is vast, and soft, with many cozy nooks and quiet zones. We’ll have an outdoor sound curfew most nights. There will be an arc.

Is this a night thing?

All chronotypes are welcome. There will be day and night programming. We’ll start more day-focused and end more evening-focused. The goal is for everyone to leave feeling better in their bodies than when they arrived.

Can I bring something to life here?

Yes. It’s a hybrid: curated from the top down, co-created from the bottom up.

Can we create a guild?

Yes! Guilds are like camps, but you don’t need to worry about food, water, or shade. Paradise has you covered.

Founding guilds

  • Aphantasians
  • Lucid Dreamers
  • Synesthetes
  • Somanauts
  • The Society for Curious Tongues
  • Monk Guild

Will there be a potluck?

Yes, there will be a phenomenological potluck the likes of which the world has never seen.

How long is the event?

Five or six nights.

This is part of a phenomenological research residency month, continuing for the three weeks following the event.

When can I arrive?

Wednesday or Friday. Arriving after 7pm on Wednesday costs €100 more. We want you here for the whole experience. If you’re a weekend warrior, you can afford it.

Where do I sleep?

Camping, glamping, vans, private cabins, and a granite villa.

What about food?

Four meals a day: Second Breakfast at 9am, Luncheon at 1pm, Supper at 7pm, and Midnight Breakfast.

Food is almost all local/organic. Omnivorously plant-forward.

Can I bring a pet?

Pets are welcome, but they must fill out the application. We want everyone at this event to be sovereign and self-responsible.

Is this some Burning Man thing?

No. Qualia strives to be tasteful. But we value the principles of sovereignty, agency, participation, and civic responsibility.

Is this event for profit?

It will most assuredly lose money.
